The aim of the\u00a0\u00a0Dnipro Hills\u00a0<\/strong>tourist trail project is to become part of the EuroVelo European network, by marking and developing the route according to European standards. One of the best-known cycling routes is the Danube trail\u2014let’s create one along the Dnieper!<\/h3>\n

Touring Route Along the Dnipro: A 1,850 km Journey Through the Picturesque Dnipro Hills<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This scenic route stretches 1,850 kilometers from Polissia in northern Kyiv region to Ochakiv and the Kinburn Spit.<\/p>\n

Primarily designed for cycling, the path follows mostly dirt roads, though at times, a kayak may be the best way to navigate sections of the Dnipro River. Every 15-20 kilometers, travelers will find guesthouses where they can rest, have a coffee, or enjoy a pastry.<\/p>\n

The route can also be considered a gastro-tour<\/strong>, as it connects local cheesemakers, wineries, apiaries, taverns, and other culinary gems.<\/p>\n

Along the way, adventurers can rent a bike or a kayak, go paragliding, and participate in numerous other organized activities.<\/p>\n

Starting Point: Kyiv Polissia<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The journey begins at the confluence of the Teterev River and the Dnipro, where dense forests, rivers, wildlife, and mushrooms create a pristine natural setting.<\/p>\n

The main trail follows the natural Dnipro Hills<\/strong>, preserving the unique forest-steppe landscapes<\/strong> from Vyshhorod through Kyiv, Trypillia, and Rzhyshchiv, circling the Trakhtemyriv Peninsula<\/strong>. These lands bear the names of ancient archaeological cultures, including the Trypillia culture<\/strong> (from the villages of Khalepe and Trypillia), the Zarubyntsi culture<\/strong> (Zarubyntsi village), and the Chernyakhiv culture<\/strong> (Chernyakhiv village). The route also occasionally runs alongside the still-impressive Zmiiv Ramparts<\/strong> and Scythian fortifications<\/strong> in Khodosivka, Trakhtemyriv, and Motronynske.<\/p>\n

Through the Heart of History<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Beyond Kaniv, the path seems to diverge from the Dnipro, but in reality, it follows the river\u2019s old channel\u2014now the Irdyn Swamp and the Tiasmyn River<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Next comes Kholodnyi Yar<\/strong>, with Buda hamlet and Semydubova Hill<\/strong>\u2014lands teeming with history since prehistoric times. The mighty Motronynske Scythian Fortress<\/strong>, dating back 2,700 years, later became the headquarters of the Kholodny Yar Republic<\/strong>, a Cossack-led resistance movement that united 25 surrounding villages and formed a 15,000-strong army, fighting Soviet occupation for five years. Before visiting, reading the memoirs of Yuriy Horlis-Horskyi<\/strong> is highly recommended.<\/p>\n

After passing the Chyhyryn Fortress<\/strong>, the route rejoins the Dnipro\u2019s banks. Here, travelers will encounter Orbita<\/strong>, an abandoned city built for a nuclear power plant that was never completed, as well as Kryliv<\/strong>, a town now submerged under a reservoir, with only a lone hill remaining as its ghostly reminder. The first stage of the route concludes in Svitlovodsk, Kremenchuk, and on the summit of Pyvykha Hill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Towards the Black Sea<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The journey continues through the Oril Reserve<\/strong>, Porohy<\/strong>, and Zaporizhzhia<\/strong>, eventually reaching Mykolaiv and Olbia<\/strong>, before ending at the Kinburn Spit<\/strong>, where the Dnipro meets the Black Sea.<\/p>\n

For every 500 km completed<\/strong>, participants earn 500 DNPR tokens<\/strong> (or an equivalent) to their crypto wallet.<\/p>\n

The DNPR token<\/strong> can be used to pay for accommodation at select hotels, buy coffee along the route, or purchase souvenirs and goods from partner businesses.<\/p>\n

Once the trail is fully marked and developed, the DNPR token<\/strong> will be launched on cryptocurrency exchanges.<\/p>\n

Civilization Along the Route<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Every 15-20 km<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find a cozy guesthouse, hotel, or glamping site<\/strong> along the route. The entire path is available on our online map<\/strong>, and you can download the track<\/strong> to your phone for offline navigation using apps like Osmand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Most villages have a grocery store<\/strong>, though some operate out of private homes or require calling the shopkeeper, who may live nearby.<\/p>\n

Mobile signal and internet<\/strong> are available almost everywhere or at least on the nearest hill.<\/p>\n

Public restrooms<\/strong> of a more \u201ccivilized\u201d kind can be found at hotels, campsites, and gas stations<\/strong>. However, in most villages, expect the traditional wooden outhouse with a hole in the floor<\/strong>\u2014be prepared!<\/p>\n

Navigation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You can download the route track<\/strong>, including points of interest, caf\u00e9s, hotels, and other useful information<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Future plans include officially marking the trail and setting up necessary infrastructure<\/strong> once the final route is approved.<\/p>\n

Grandfather Dnipro<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The inhabitants of what is now Ukraine 2-3 thousand years ago<\/strong> called themselves Skolots<\/strong>, the Children of Skil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Skil Targitai<\/strong> was the son of Papai<\/strong>, the god of thunder, and Api<\/strong>, the daughter of Borysphen<\/strong>, the god of rivers.<\/p>\n

Herodotus, the father of history and a contemporary of the Scythians, describes their cosmological beliefs<\/strong> as follows:
A Serpent<\/strong> stole the waters of the Dnipro-Borysphen<\/strong>, trapping them behind mountains. Papai<\/strong>, the Thunder God<\/strong>, carved a new path for the river, freeing Api<\/strong>, Borysphen\u2019s daughter. They married, and their son, Skil Targitai<\/strong>, became the First Man<\/strong>. After a series of heroic deeds, Skil Targitai wed Tabiti, the Sun\u2019s daughter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Their three sons\u2014Arpoxais (King-River), Lipoxais (King-Mountain), and Kolaxais (King-Sun)<\/strong>\u2014received divine gifts from the sky:<\/p>\n
