It was well-fortified, featuring earthen ramparts, bastions, a moat, and a garrison of Polish troops.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"262\" data-end=\"540\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">However, on the night of <strong data-start=\"287\" data-end=\"305\">August 5, 1635<\/strong>, a detachment of Zaporizhian Cossacks led by <strong data-start=\"351\" data-end=\"366\">Ivan Sulyma<\/strong> launched a swift night assault, annihilated the garrison, and destroyed the fortress. The fortress played a crucial role during <strong data-start=\"128\" data-end=\"188\">Bohdan Khmelnytsky&#8217;s National Liberation War (1648\u20131657)<\/strong>. However, after <strong data-start=\"205\" data-end=\"226\">Left-Bank Ukraine<\/strong> was annexed by the <strong data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"267\">Muscovite Tsardom<\/strong>, Kodak gradually lost its importance and fell into decline.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"331\" data-end=\"357\"><strong data-start=\"335\" data-end=\"355\">Legends of Kodak<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4 data-start=\"359\" data-end=\"387\"><strong data-start=\"364\" data-end=\"385\">Sulyma\u2019s Treasure<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"625\">According to local lore, during the <strong data-start=\"424\" data-end=\"432\">1635<\/strong> assault, <strong data-start=\"442\" data-end=\"457\">Ivan Sulyma<\/strong> ordered his Cossacks to hide part of their loot in the fortress\u2019s underground passages. Some believe that these treasures remain buried somewhere beneath the ground.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"663\"><strong data-start=\"632\" data-end=\"661\">The Ghost of the Fortress<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"664\" data-end=\"870\">Residents tell of a ghostly <strong data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"711\">Cossack warrior<\/strong> wandering the ruins at night, guarding the ancient secrets of Kodak. Some claim to have seen the shadow of a <strong data-start=\"821\" data-end=\"843\">hetman-like figure<\/strong>, which vanishes at dawn.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"872\" data-end=\"900\"><strong data-start=\"877\" data-end=\"898\">The Cossack Grave<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"1112\">Legend has it that near the ruins of Kodak lies a <strong data-start=\"951\" data-end=\"965\">mass grave<\/strong> of Cossacks who perished defending the fortress. Some historians suggest that this site may still contain <strong data-start=\"1072\" data-end=\"1088\">undiscovered<\/strong> 17th-century burials.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1137\"><strong data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1135\">Koda\u010dka Balka<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1498\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1156\">Koda\u010dka Balka<\/strong> is an integral part of the <strong data-start=\"1184\" data-end=\"1225\">historical and geographical landscape<\/strong> of <strong data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1245\">Staryi Kodak<\/strong>. This natural ravine, formed by erosion, acted as a <strong data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1317\">natural barrier<\/strong>, protecting the fortress from enemy attacks.
